What is SEM?

Search Engine Marketing is the practice of placing paid advertisements on search engine results pages to help visitors find your website. It is commonly paired with SMM (Social Media Marketing), which involves placing paid ads on social media networks like Facebook.

How does SEM work?

When a user types into Google (or Bing or Yahoo) something like “Your Service in Your Town” a list of links appear on what’s called the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

Above those results, and along the side of them, search engines provide a special place for paid advertisements.

Most paid advertising programs, on search or social media, charge when a user actually clicks your ad, rather than charging just to see it. With SEM, you can be assured that you’re paying for actions rather than impressions.
